The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History seeks an Assistant Director.  We seek a highly motivated and self-directed individual who will work with museum staff as well as on- and off-campus partners to elevate the impact of public programs of the museum.  The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the overall direction, supervision, and management of the Public Section of the Museum. Broadly stated, duties include vision and program development, project management, supervisory and budget responsibilities, overseeing campus and community outreach, and graduate program teaching and mentoring. The Assistant Director  will ensure delivery of relevant, accessible, accurate and engaging exhibits and programs that aim to foster scientific literacy in citizens of all ages and backgrounds. We seek someone who is data-driven, utilizing and developing both quantitative and qualitative approaches  to assess the impacts of the programs we present.  S/he will recruit, train and mentor a staff of museum professionals, and be an engaged participant in the Museum Studies Program, teaching in areas of passion and expertise and mentoring future leaders in the museum profession.  Ability to work effectively and enthusiastically in a university environment is critical.  Experience and in-depth knowledge of exhibition processes, program evaluation, successful grant-writing, project management and strategic planning will be important attributes of our new Assistant Director.  The successful applicant will understand diverse tools and innovative technologies to engage audiences (such as social media, embedded systems, and rapid prototyping) and be able to deploy these tools successfully in museum settings. This is a non-faculty, non-tenure track position

Key Responsibilities

Public Section Vision and Development 

  • Work with Museum faculty and staff to develop a vision for the Public Programs of the Museum.
  • Work with the Public Section staff to develop programs, evaluation approaches and impacts for our wide range of constituencies.
  • Seek funding to support that vision, which may include grants, awards, sponsorships, revenues, donations, and in-kind collaborations. 
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals to a variety of internal and external sources of funding and will work with the Director on behalf of major fund-raising efforts.

Public Section Project Management 

  • Lead all aspects of the development of project and program budgets, manages schedules and coordinate implementation by staff to deliver high impact programming.
  • Ensure program audience surveys, assessments, and evaluations are conducted.
  • Track program and other public section impacts.

Public Section Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Perform annual staff reviews, including mentoring, as required or needed.
  • Assess and recommend staff and student support.
  • Acts as fiscal manager for section general fund, auxiliary, gift and grant funding.

MFS Graduate Program Teaching and Mentoring 

  • Teach one course every other year in the Museum and Field Studies Graduate Program.
  • Chair and serve on committees of Museum and Field Studies students as appropriate.
  • Coordinate hands-on, within-Museum training opportunities with the Director of the Museum.

Campus and Community Outreach 

  • Expand existing and develop new campus alliances with other cognates, institutes, and student groups to increase collaboration and campus reach.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with museum professionals in the region, as well as with related professional organizations and agencies.

Required Qualifications

  • MA or MS in Museum Studies or in a related discipline. 
  • A minimum of five years of museum and/or museum-related experience.
  • At least two years of management experience.

  • Proven project management abilities, budget oversight, and development. Computer skills and web literacy (including familiarity with social media).
  • Passion about bringing together the resources of the university museum and the larger communities of Boulder and the Front Range.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph. D. in a related discipline, including but not limited to Art and Art History, Anthropology, Education, History, Psychology, natural sciences or related discipline. 
  • College-level teaching experience, participation/leadership in professional associations, and experience training or supervising students. 
  • Current or previous research experience within one or more of the following areas:
  1. museum and cultural heritage studies
  2. museum management and leadership
  3. collections management
  4. interpretation and meaning-making
  5. museum, information and communication technology
  6. evaluation and assessment
  • At least two years’ experience in development and/or administration, preferably in the not-for-profit
