Position Focus:

Reporting to the Director of Public Programs, the Assistant Director of Public Education and Outreach leads the Yale Peabody Museum’s K-12, family and adult educational programs; summer camp; youth development programs; lifelong learning initiatives; and community partnerships and outreach. The Assistant Director will increase the Yale Peabody Museum’s impact as an educational resource for K-12 students, teachers and members of the public, strengthening the connections between the Museum’s collections and staff with local and regional communities. Through active collaboration with community partners, as well as Museum and University colleagues, the Assistant Director will advance the Museum’s educational goals while developing sustained, positive relationships with its various constituencies.

Essential Duties

Lead the strategic planning and development of educational programs for schools, teachers, families, and students of all ages in both formal and informal settings that align to the needs of the local community and the Museum’s commitment to rigor, creativity and innovation. Establish effective partnerships, working across Museum offices and staff to create educational programs and activities that draw on the wealth of material and expertise present in the Museum and its collections. Lead long-term strategic planning for the Museum’s K-12 school and group visit programs, ensuring their effective integration with ongoing programs and mission of the Museum. Supervise the planning of new and expanded educational programming, actively engaging with colleagues across the Museum and the University, as well as civic and community-based organizations. Work with Museum staff and external stakeholders to develop and implement pedagogical strategies and evaluation tools for K-12 programs that reflect current best practices. Provide strategic oversight of the Museum’s award-winning EVOLUTIONS Afterschool Program and Sci.CORPS career ladder program. Work with relevant staff to identify and apply for funding sources to sustain and grow these programs. Serve as the Summer Camp Director, taking primary responsibility for the Summer Camp program. With Public Programs staff, plan and implement the Summer Camp curriculum. Collaborate with other Museum staff, members of the Yale community, and external partners to develop engaging content and create inspirational experiences for camp attendees. Develop budgets, obtain necessary licenses, hire seasonal staff, and  ensure effective promotion and advertising. Lead the planning and implementation of many of the Museum’s public family programs, including but not limited to the Museum’s annual Fiesta Latina and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., other weekday and weekend programs, earned income programs, and occasional evening programs. Supervise and coordinate staff within the Museum, the University and external groups as appropriate to implement Museum events. Oversee program-specific budgets. Develop and refine new public programs aimed at increasing general museum attendance. Provide strategic direction for the Museum’s adult programming, including lectures, gallery talks, natural science illustration courses, and other classes and programs aimed at an adult audience. Supervise Public Programs staff and students in the implementation of these programs. Oversee the embedding of the Museum’s volunteer program into a broader lifelong learning program, ensuring ongoing access to high-quality training, mentorship, and skill-building opportunities. Develop new and engaging enrichment experiences and educational programs that appeal to diverse audiences. Serve as the Museum’s primary liaison for community outreach, engaging local and regional communities with the Museum’s collections, exhibitions and facilities. Serve as Museum liaison with individual University and community events, committees and other organizations as needed. Supervise development and implementation of the Museum’s endowed outdoor education programs. Oversee the development and provision of K-12 teacher professional development opportunities, including teacher open houses, presentations and workshops. Represent the University in the national and international museum community for the purpose of sharing research and developments in museum-based K-12 and public programming. Work with the Museum’s Marketing & Communications team to ensure that publicity for family and adult programs fully represents the vision and purpose of programmatic offerings, and to expand audience awareness and participation. With the Office of Development, identify funding opportunities for educational programming, write grant proposals and, where appropriate, meet with donors. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in related field and at least five years of relevant museum experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated track record of working collaboratively and thinking strategically with a wide range of audiences and stakeholders. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships both within and outside the University, with a wide diversity of museum audiences. Ability to motivate and collaborate with diverse constituencies.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated enthusiasm for the active engagement of school and public audiences. Excellent teaching skills with a commitment to museum-based, object-based, and interactive approaches. Strong interest in and familiarity with museums, and to exploring and supporting innovative approaches to working with Peabody resources.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Self-directed with the ability to take initiative and anticipate actions needed; ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment, ability to solve problems, and to be a team player in an active museum environment. Ability to effectively supervise and manage a staff team through major organizational transition and change.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including grant writing. Demonstrated ability to represent the Museum through public speaking engagements.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability to work well under pressure while exhibiting professionalism, a customer service attitude, and consistent flexibility in a busy multi-task environment. Attention to detail and ability to conceptualize steps involved in implementing programs as well as to see the big picture.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Hands-on experience with museum education programs or similar informal education programs. Advanced degree in a field relevant to the Museum. Face-to-face customer/visitor service in a museum or cultural environment. Knowledge of natural history with the ability to answer general questions regarding each field of study represented by the Museum’s ten curatorial divisions.
