Collections Assistant, Invertebrate Zoology PT (Term), $17-17.50/hour. Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver, CO. A one year term position with the possibility of renewal.

Job Description: 

This position works with collections managers and curators to help ensure proper collection storage, documentation, accessibility, and long term preservation for use in research, education, and exhibits, and to fulfill trust obligations of the museum for the preservation of collections. This person will specifically work in the Marine Invertebrate collection that consists primarily of shells and the Arachnology collection consisting of alcohol preserved specimens. The assistant will help with various collections tasks including processing incoming donations, re-labeling specimens, carrying out data clean-up, and organizing collections.

Essential duties:

  • Assists in preparing collections following policies and procedures, including inventory, data clean-up, data entry, resolution of data discrepancies, imaging, storage mount construction, and packing.
  • Prepares and oversees the work of volunteers and interns as necessary.
  • Ensures all preparation and curation tasks follow established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures minimal damage to objects and specimens during collection activities.
  • Provides information and expertise on collections to internal and external audiences.

Minimum qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Entomology, Museum Studies, or other field of life sciences required.
  • 1 years’ experience handling museum collections required.
  • 1 years’ experience with relational databases required. 
  • Intermediate proficiency with web enabled applications required.
  • Occasional local travel and out of state travel required.   

Ideal candidate will have: 

  • Basic knowledge of mollusk and arthropod taxonomy and classification.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with various age groups.
