The Field Museum is hiring a full-time Collections Assistant to work in the Invertebrate Zoology Collection. The Invertebrate Zoology (IZ) Collection serves as a repository (over 300,000 lots containing well over a million specimens) for basic and applied research of recent mollusks and all other invertebrates (including urochordates) exclusive of insects, arachnids, and myriapods. Primary duties of the Collections Assistant include ongoing digitization of the collection, imaging, preparing loans, managing volunteers and includes opportunities for field work, attending conferences, and contributing to research.

The Invertebrate Zoology Collections Assistant will report to the Collections Manager and participate in various aspects of collections care and curation. The position must assist as needed with collections activities but could also be tasked with focusing on specific tasks and duties as needed or required (e.g. loans, extramurally-funded projects, equipment care). Advancement through levels I, II, and III is based on gained experience and proficiency with duties and responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop skills and experience necessary to assist with day-to-day aspects of collections care and curation
  • Participation in digitization efforts; including transcription of label data, imaging specimens, georeferencing, species inventory, and development and evaluation of workflows and standards to ensure best practices
  • Develop skills to efficiently and confidently use the museum’s collection database,
  • Gain experience incorporating new material into the collection (preparation, accessioning, cataloging)
  • Actively participate in packing, shipping, and receiving of outgoing and incoming loans
  • Participate in hosting research visitors to the collection
  • Support for the museum’s public programming and promoting the mission of the museum and its fundraising goals
  • Assist with training, mentorship, and working with interns and volunteers in the collection when needed

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and one year’s zoological collection experience
  • Good organizational skills necessary to keep collection accessible
  • Ability to work well with others
