The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology (MMA), located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, seeks a Collections Manager to oversee the care and preservation of the Archaeology collection.

The MMA was founded in 1932 as the Museum of Anthropology of the University of New Mexico, becoming the first public museum in Albuquerque. In 1972, it was renamed the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and, in 1973, the Maxwell Museum was awarded its first accreditation from the American Association of Museums. With its associated research institutes — the Office of Contract Archaeology, the Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies, and the Maxwell Center for Anthropological Research — the Museum represents a comprehensive center for cultural studies and public education.

Responsibilities: The Collections Manager will manage all aspects of archaeological collections care. S/he will establish work priorities in consultations with the Museum Director; interact with the national and international scientific community, including managing object loans, responding to inquiries, and maximizing utilization of collections so as to promote student training and scholarly research; and interact with internal contacts such as faculty, curators, museum staff and various university administrators to exchange information regarding the collections.

Minimum Qualifications: Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Bachelor’s degree; at least 3 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

A directly related higher degree from an accredited institution may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in museum studies or anthropology and previous museum collections education or training including collection management policies and procedures
