The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD), University of Copenhagen, is seeking a permanent fulltime position for a Collections Manager for Library and Cultural History, starting 1 March 2023 or as soon thereafter as possible. You will be part of a diverse Collection Management Team across the museum and will refer to the Head of Digital Collections.
You will manage the museum’s library and archival material, as well as the cultural, biocultural, anthropological, and history of science collections. Responsibilities include the physical care, maintenance, preservation, digitization, and security of the collections, as well as library loans. We are searching for a candidate with a passion for museums and nature, experience with library and archival care, and a profound interest in natural and cultural history collections. As a person you have positive mindset, are open towards changes and understand that collaboration is a key to success. Your work capacity is high, and you are able to balance strategic development with day-to-day operations.
The NHMD is currently working on a high-profile New Museum Project (see below and https://nyt.snm.ku.dk/english/ ), which involves entirely new buildings and galleries. Therefore, the successful candidate will be expected to select objects for, and to advise development of, this and other upcoming major public exhibitions.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Physical care, maintenance, preservation, and security of the Library and Cultural History collections
- Contact person to the Royal Library and other library services
- Improving and updating the physical organization of the collections
- Processing incoming and outgoing objects and/or materials, including donations, exchanges, and loans, including library loans, with appropriate permits and documentation
- Documenting the collection through digitization, including entering and updating records in internal databases, and registering new library acquisitions in external databases
- Assisting in the planning and overseeing digitization of collections
- Rehousing the collections as necessary
- Staying current in modern techniques in collections maintenance and database management
- Working cooperatively with other collection management and museum staff, including curators, to achieve the highest level of collection care and productivity across organizational units
- Provide service to scientific guests and supervise and train visitors, students, and volunteers
- Assisting staff with finding relevant Library and Archive material
- Selection of archival materials to improve object storage conditions
- Supporting the planning and preparation of temporary and permanent exhibits.
Desirable qualifications and skills:
- Knowledge of library and archival collections, and/or cultural history, anthropological, and history of science collections equivalent to a Master’s degree in a relevant field. Other relevant expertise and knowledge about archives and cultural history collections will also be a suitable background
- Work experience involving day-to-day management of archives, libraries and collections that include cultural objects
- Working knowledge of relevant terminology
- Ability to work effectively independently as well as collaboratively
- Ability to learn and develop new skills related to object and data management
- Strong communication skills
- Excellent computer skills with a particular focus on library and archival collection management systems
- An understanding of relevant international compliance procedures regarding import, export, and shipping of archival material and physical objects
- Ability to read and understand written Danish
- Fluency in English (spoken and/or written), or willingness to learn English as a working language
- Fluency in Danish (spoken and/or written), or willingness to learn Danish as a working language (see above for minimum requirement for Danish)
- Driver’s license.
