The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD), University of Copenhagen, is posting a permanent fulltime position as Collections Manager in Entomology, starting May 1st 2021 or as soon thereafter as possible.
The successful candidate will care for the extensive Entomology collections at NHMD on a day-to day basis, including overseeing and documenting all collections-related procedures such as accessioning, deaccessioning, archiving, labeling, handling of loans, exchanges and gifts, cataloguing etc.
The candidate will become a member of the collection management group at the museum and will primarily work with the entomological collections, but can also be assigned to cross-cutting tasks in the other scientific collections at the museum.
Due to the new museum project (see below), the successful candidate is also expected to dedicate a significant amount of time working on exhibits and moving of collections to new storage facilities.
The candidate is expected to have experience and qualifications in working with natural history, and in particular entomological collections. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be detail-oriented, organized, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Processing incoming and outgoing specimens and/or materials, including purchases, donations, exchanges and loans.
- Documenting the collection, including cataloguing, entering/updating database records and inventorying, specimen and/or material information.
- Maintaining and producing collection-relevant policies and protocol documents.
- Staying current in modern techniques in collections maintenance, systematic entomology and database management.
- Working cooperatively with other collection management and conservation staff to achieve the highest level of collection care and productivity across organizational units.
- Assisting curators, visiting & citizen scientists, students and other visitors using the collections.
- Supervising and training of technicians, student interns and volunteers.
- Taking part in planning and overseeing the digitization, re-housing, and movement of the collections as necessary.
- Supporting the planning and preparation of temporary and permanent exhibits.
Desirable qualifications and skills:
- Relevant Master’s degree in biology, conservation (conservator), or a comparable field
- Working knowledge of zoology, invertebrate taxonomy, and the organization and management of entomological collections
- Experience with database software typically used in natural history collections, especially Specify
- Ability to work effectively independently and as a team member
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal), and computer skills
- Fluent in English (spoken and/or written)
- Fluent in, or willing to, learn Danish as additional working language
- Driver’s license (B)
About the Natural History Museum of Denmark
The Natural History Museum of Denmark is the Danish national museum for zoology, botany and geology, and it contains large global scientific collections of preserved animals, plants, fossils, and minerals. In its current form, the museum was established on January 1, 2004 by the merging of four long-standing institutions: the Botanic Garden, the Botanical Museum & Central Library, the Geological Museum, and the Zoological Museum.
A new museum of natural history is currently being built in the Botanical Garden (www.nyt.snm.ku.dk/english/), and this is expected to present the museum with several challenges in relation to the establishment of new storage facilities and the associated relocation of collections, as well as in locating and preparing specimens for displays within new galleries.
The collection managers are organized in a cross-cutting unit under the Section Head of Collections Management and collaborate with the Heads of Zoology, Geology and Botany and the scientific curators of the museum in the curation of specimens, including preparation, preservation, registration, etc.
The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD) is part of the University of Copenhagen, and therefore host and supervise undergraduate, graduate and PhD students as well as postdocs that use the museum collections for their research. The museum is an international institution with many foreign students and researchers and English is widely used as working language.
