Museum of the Rockies (MOR) seeks a Collections Manager-Registrar for its Department of Paleontology. The Paleontology Collections Manager-Registrar (PCMR) will need to bring to the position an understanding of the museum field, an enthusiastic drive for organization, communication, inclusivity, and the enjoyment of working collaboratively as a team member. The PCMR is responsible for implementing all policies and procedures pertaining to the maintenance of the Museum’s natural history collections, including items in the permanent collection, federal collections, state collections, osteology collections, paleohistology collections, teaching collection as well as items on loan to and from the Museum. Museum of the Rockies (MOR) is Montana’s most visited museum. In 2019, the museum received over 220,000 general visitors and served an additional 87,000 visitors through school, youth, and public programs. During COVID, the museum has remained active and open except for a 2.5-month period in the spring of 2020. Despite understandable capacity and safety limitations, MOR has been able to serve the visiting public and significantly expand its virtual programs. MOR is a college-level division of Montana State University, an independent 501(c)(3) organization, a Smithsonian Affiliate, an accredited AAM museum, and a repository for state and federal fossils. The interdisciplinary museum has one of the finest collections of paleontology in the world and a significant cultural collection from the Northern Rocky region. Located on a 22-acre museum site, it includes a 120,000-square-foot-facility, the state-of-the-art Taylor Planetarium, the 220 seat Hager Auditorium, Martin Children’s Discovery Center, and Living History Farm, along with an off-site 553-acre paleontology preserve. 

Primary Responsibilities: 
– Documents paleontological and associated natural history collections and ensures all legal requirements are met. – Tracks permits, loans, gifts, purchases, donations, and exchanges. – Maintains specimen care through appropriate, secure, environmentally controlled storage space.   – Monitors the condition of paleontological and natural history collections in storage, labs, and on exhibit. Ensures the safety and security of all paleontological and natural history collections that are moved or handled. – Tracks specimen inventory and related data.  – Maintains scientific contextual data and associated records and ensures that this information is routinely updated in the database.  – Coordinates with visiting researchers.  – Develops collections policies and procedures with paleontology department. – Ensures staff, volunteers, and visitors adhere to collections policies and procedures. 

Secondary Responsibilities: 
– Assists students, faculty, researchers, and the general public with collections information.  – Represents the Museum in public and professional settings.  – Trains and manages interns and volunteers as assigned.   – Supervises the handling and condition reporting of incoming and outgoing collections and exhibitions.   – Participates in MOR outreach and engagement as assigned.   – Assists the Curator of Paleontology in raising funds for the paleontology program.   – Has the flexibility to assume other duties as assigned related to paleontology and the museum in general.  

Minimum Qualifications:MA or MS in Paleontological Studies or related field. Demonstrated museum experience working in registration and/or collections management. Demonstrated expertise in the use of collections management database systems, Mac operating systems, and digital photography for documentary purposes. Demonstrated knowledge of museum registration and fossil/geological/biological/paleohistological specimen handling techniques. Knowledge of and experience with risk management, museum security, and environmental control systems. Knowledge of PRPA, NEPA, Antiquities Act of 1906, Lacey Act, all federal and state laws/regulations that pertain to paleontological and associated resources. 

Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated expertise with Specify collections management database. Demonstrated experience with intern and volunteer management. Demonstrated experience with fossil preparation and paleontology field work. 
Demonstrated experience with communicating natural history information to the general public. Experience with 3-D scanning fossil specimens.Demonstrated experience with in-house and traveling exhibit installation. 

 Successful Candidate Abilities:
The successful candidate will be a detail oriented, self-motivated, organized museum professional. This person will possess strong written and verbal communication skills. They will take a leadership role in the creation and implementation of policy regarding the physical safety of the institution’s paleontological, natural history collections and associated records. They must be able to work independently using good judgement and enjoy being part of a fast-paced, hardworking team environment that is committed to excellence in all levels of the organization. 

Position Special Requirements/Additional InformationThis position requires occasional evening and weekend work as determined by the Curator of Paleontology. Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points).
