The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 3 position in the New York State Museum (Albany, NY). Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 4 or higher, the incumbent will serve as a curator within the Geology program. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Curate the Museum’s Geology Bedrock Core Collection (primarily Paleozoic – Precambrian in age). The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and building the intellectual integrity of the collection, expanding the Museum’s core collection holdings according to Museum and discipline standards, and ensuring proper physical care of these collections;
- Continue a well-established program of geological laboratory research and field research (including mapping), design specific research strategies and conduct research focused on New York bedrock geology that meets the highest professional standards. This research will include utilizing the Geology Core Collection; Overnight travel for fieldwork, specimen/data collection and mapping up to 10% of schedule.
- Supervise the Geology Core collections manager, the Empire State Organized Geological Information System (ESOGIS) website-database administrator, and potentially other museum personnel, interns, volunteers, and students in properly organizing and cataloging the Geology Core collections;
- Oversee the updates and maintenance of the ESOGIS online database;
- Oversee the development of grant and other funding proposals to extramural sources (e.g., USGS, National Science Foundation) to solicit support for research, curatorial, and educational programs;
- Prepare research findings and research reports for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles, maps, technical reports, monographs and/or books, and professional presentations;
- Participate in the development of public and educational programs to meet the Museum’s internal and/or community-oriented goals and may take responsibility for their implementation. These programs include participation in the Museum’s Earth Science Workshop for teachers and administrators in K-12 institutions, production of educational documents as well as live, in-person and/or pre-recorded lectures and field trips;
- Participate in exhibit development and planning; and
- Develop methods and carry out means of communicating research to the Museum’s diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not traditionally represented in museums.
Minimum Qualifications:
Non-Competitive Appointment: A Ph.D. in geology or related field and one year of professional experience in geology; OR an M.S. in geology or related field and three years of such experience in geology; OR a bachelor’s in geology or related field and four years of such experience in geology.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in geology; research experience in Cambrian, and/or Ordovician, and/or Silurian geology related to New York State; well-established analytical skills in geology; a demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications in geology; experience working with bedrock cores and/or archived/museum geology collections; involvement in educational outreach; ability to fund research and collections care through grants and/or other sources; certification as or willingness to become a licensed professional geologist in NY; and supervisory experience.
