Leibniz Institute for Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) will be established as an integration of Centre of Natural History of University of Hamburg (CeNak), Hamburg into Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig – Leibniz Institute for Animal Biodiversity (ZFMK), Bonn, as such LIB will be a foundation under public law and research museum of Leibniz Association. LIB will contribute to biodiversity research with its extensive collections and in research fields of taxonomy, morphology and molecular science, will contribute to conservation of global biodiversity, to documenting and analyzing evolutionary and ecological biodiversity change and engage in science transfer activities on biodiversity change and its potential causes. LIB is looking for a scientist for a tenure track position of a Curator Ornithology (m/f/d) in Hamburg starting July 1st 2021, representing research at an internationally competitive level. The successful candidate will bridge the gap between the bird collection and applied ornithological research on drivers of biodiversity change in space and time. The candidate’s scientific expertise should be evident collection-based ornithological research and in at least one of the following fields:
- population ecology and/ or macro-ecology of birds
- avian evolution
We expect the candidate to
- hold a PhD in zoology or related areas, preferred with focus on ornithology,
- have expertise in avian taxonomy and profound species knowledge of extant birds,
- have working experience with scientific bird specimens,
- have a strong publication record,
- have demonstrated knowledge of biostatistics and data analysis,
- acquire substantial third-party funding,
- interact with and support citizen scientists,
- promote LIB-internal teamwork and external collaborations,
- have a vision of future work in the field of ornithology by collection-based research strategies that integrate evolutionary research and ecology.
The candidate will work in Centre for Taxonomy and Morphology, and contribute to the ongoing development of LIB as a globally leading institute for the study of biodiversity change. As curator, the candidate will take responsibility for the ornithological collection housed by LIB in Hamburg. This includes collection care, service to the scientific community, development of the collection, and digitization activities. LIB provides scientific collections and research labs for molecular and morphological work, from imaging to genomics. The successful candidate is expected to apply an array of appropriate modern methods, to integrate into existing and future in-house collaborations, to contribute to teaching at the university, and to take part in self-administration and outreach activities. Working language is English, German language skills should be acquired on long term.
