Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Herbarium
Overview:
The Herbarium at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden is now accepting applications for a full time Project Manager, three-year duration. Application deadline: May 25, 2016.
Job Summary:
The Project Manager will over-see the day-to-day management of an NSF funded project aimed at curating and digitizing 30,000 vascular plant specimens of historic, taxonomic, and geographic importance representing collections of ten significant botanists of the 20th century. This individual will be responsible for specimen processing, digitization, as well as training and supervision of student interns.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Day-to-day management of all aspects of specimen processing and curation, including sorting, creating specimen labels, mounting, and accessioning specimens.
- Transcribe specimen data from herbarium specimen labels, field notebooks or digital images into herbarium database.
- Capture digital images of specimens of vascular plants.
- Convert locality description data into latitude and longitude (= georeference) using georeferencing software and mapping tools.
- Work with Collections Manager to monitor data quality.
- Train and supervise undergraduate and high school interns in all aspects of the project.
Education/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in botany, biology, or related field required
- Minimum of two years experience with herbarium collections procedures
- Demonstrated experience with training and supervision of junior staff
- Familiarity with digital photography
- Computer literate, including familiarity with natural history collections databases, Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, mapping utilities
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Excellent organizational skills and an eye for details
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs
