Position SummaryThe American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.The Vertebrate Paleontology (VP) department is seeking a full-time Curatorial Associate to coordinate and be responsible for the management of the collections, archives and fossil preparation lab of the department in the Division of Paleontology.Job duties include:Management and coordination of collection curation activities:Lead management of the VP fossil collections, ensuring their preservation, organization and accessibility.Supervise the preparation and conservation of fossil specimens and related comparative material by lab staff, in consultation with VP curators.Supervise archives staff in the management of VP archives and libraries.Identify and prioritize short- and long-term infrastructural needs of the collections and develop strategies for addressing these needs.Lead the accessioning process for specimens within the VP collections.Prepare annual internal reports on collections activities.Maintenance of departmental collections databases:Realize transition to new catalog system, including public-facing aspects.Supervise and assist collections staff’s catalog data entry and troubleshooting.Identify, prioritize and facilitate implementation of digitization efforts and the curation and dissemination of digital data.Fundraising:Apply for extramural funds to maintain and enhance VP collections.Supervise grant-funded curation activities and support their objectives/results.Interaction with public and AMNH staff in the presentation and explanation of VP collections activities.The expected salary range for the Curatorial Associate is $93,000/annual – $98,000/annual. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required QualificationsPh. D. in a related field, such as geology, earth sciences or biology, with a focus in paleontology.
2 years experience with collections management and collections databases.
Preferred Qualifications5 or more years experience in collections management and collections databases.
Demonstrated success procuring funding.
Experience supervising staff, interns, and/or volunteers.
