The University of Michigan is one of the world’s leading public research universities, and our community works at the forefront of research, teaching, and innovation. With deep roots that stretch back to the founding of the University and international visibility, the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History (UMMNH) has an opportunity to lead the science museum community in innovative practices to communicate and support the research and teaching activities of universities around the world.
UMMNH is a place that inspires curiosity, inviting both young and old to explore the natural world, and a planetarium to discover the universe and bring the latest in scientific research to the community. UMMNH opened its spectacular new facility in the Biological Sciences Building on April 14, 2019. The building design blurs the boundaries between public spaces and research areas, putting science on display. All-new exhibits and educational programs feature LSA’s world-class natural science collections, cutting-edge research by University of Michigan faculty, and interdisciplinary topics of global and local concern.
The University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts seeks applications for an inspiring and collaborative leader with a passion for science, education, equity, and inclusion to lead the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History. The Director will be charged with maximizing the impact of a spectacular new Museum facility at one of the world’s preeminent public research universities and outstanding liberal arts colleges.
We seek a leader who will develop a long-term vision for the next decade and beyond. With a new facility, strong relationships with faculty across a range of scientific disciplines, engaged students, and the public, and a critical mission to encourage the public understanding of science and our rapidly changing natural world, UMMNH is ready to embark on a new strategic planning process to chart its future under the leadership of a new Director. That plan will need to address all aspects of the Museum, including management, research, education and community engagement and outreach. The Director will be expected to build wide support for this vision at all levels of the Museum and the broader community of the University of Michigan and the local community.
It is expected that candidates will have a record of distinguished achievement and one or more advanced degrees or equivalent in science, education, nonprofit management or a related field. Leadership at a museum or cultural institution is expected, with 10 years of managing complex organizations. Experience with a research institution or similar organization (natural history museum, planetarium) is desired.
The compensation range for this position annually is between $125,000 and $135,000.
A generous benefits package includes: Medical, Dental, Vision, Short-Term, and Long-Term Disability Insurance Options; 403-b retirement savings plan with a 10% match; Vacation and Sick time; Ten (10) Paid Holidays; and Family Bereavement leave.
