The Fundy Geological Museum is situated adjacent to the world-renowned Bay of Fundy in the town of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. It is one of Nova Scotia’s 28 provincial museum sites and has been operated by the Cumberland Geological Society (CGS) since its opening in 1993. Its mandate is to present the history of geological time focussing on the unique features of the Minas Basin and Bay of Fundy region.
The museum is housed in a 17,000 square foot building and features a new permanent gallery with interactive exhibits, fossils and minerals; a fossil preparation lab; archival and specimen collections storage; meeting rooms; and a gift shop. The nearby fossil cliffs are a unique feature of the museum’s programming, research and collecting activities. The museum is open year-round. Reporting to the Chair, Board of Directors (CGS), you oversee all museum-related activities including the day-to-day operation of the museum and gift shop and are required to lead geological field trips and excursions. You work closely with staff, the Board and its committees to prepare long term plans for museum development. You are accountable, daily, for all facets of the museum facility including financial and human resources management. You provide leadership and direction in creating high quality, relevant visitor experiences and ensure the long term curation, conservation, development and security of the museum collections.
As the ideal candidate, you are an experienced and motivated manager with high integrity and three years’ experience leading and supervising staff. You possess strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and excellent day-to-day administration and financial abilities.
You have a bachelor’s degree in geology or appropriate discipline plus five years’ experience or a Master’s degree with 3 years’ experience. As well, you are keenly interested in growing and sharing your knowledge of Nova Scotia’s geological history through field work and trips, programming and exhibitions, research, collections management, workshops, publications, social media and the Internet.
Museum experience in scientific research, collections curating and management, exhibit and program development are desirable qualifications for this position. Your career has been characterized by your success in establishing and fostering relationships within your previous organizations and communities. You have experience in operations management and in the development of facilities, programs, collections, events and exhibits.
