Founded in 1866, The Yale Peabody Museum (YPM) is among the oldest, largest, and most prolific university natural history museums in the world. Fundamental to the Peabody’s mission is the stewardship of the Museum’s rich collections, which provide a remarkable record of the history of the earth, its life, and its cultures. The collections housed in the Peabody greatly enhance research and teaching at Yale and draw visitors from across the region and around the world.
The Peabody is currently undergoing a renovation to improve every aspect of the Museum, bringing the Museum up-to-date and preparing it for the future. As part of this comprehensive upgrade, the Peabody’s vast collection of more than 14 million objects and specimens will be made more accessible to faculty, students and visitors from New Haven and beyond. The Museum will increase its gallery space by 50%, feature cutting-edge exhibits, and highlight its extraordinary collections for researchers, students, and the public. The renovation will incorporate additional space for faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students to work with collections, including new object study classrooms and imaging facilities, which will expand opportunities to learn from the collections.
Reporting directly to the Museum’s Director, the Director of Collections & Research is a member of the senior leadership team, and provides strategic leadership, oversight, and management of the Staff and initiatives related to the Peabody’s collections and their uses in research, teaching (with the Director of Student Programs), and other areas of the Museum, including co-management (with Curators) of Divisional collections Staff, and oversight of Conservation, Archives, Registrar, Systems, Informatics, and Publications. The Director will be instrumental in developing a strategic vision for collections care and stewardship, with a focus on furthering the teaching and research goals of the Museum and University.
At the Yale Peabody Museum we are working on Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion institutional priorities so that we can learn to better serve our communities, amplify marginalized voices and perspectives, and create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
