Part of the Connecting Collections workshop series

Join us to celebrate the diversity of Latin American and Caribbean natural history collections and their contributions to societies’ challenges and research needs, discuss future opportunities and developments, and connect with the diversity of networks.

Collections’ wealths, stored in access-restricted rooms and facilities, often remain hidden from the public, scientists and policy-makers, if not digitized and made available online. Similarly, especially smaller institutions and their collections might not be well known beyond their local and national contexts.

As collections community and biodiversity scientists, we would like to change this. In this session the digital tools are introduced that provide visibility to natural science collections. Pivotal is the GBIF Registry of Scientific Collections (GRSciColl) and its expanding functionality. Latimer Core, the brand-new TDWG standard for describing collections will enable information-rich qualitative and quantitative representations of collections. Together these tools provide the foundation for long-term involvement and the continuity of collections social and technical networks, thus over time enabling the development of digital resources and capacity.

In breakout groups participants have the possibility to discuss with the tools’ developers what they want for and can receive back from a global collections registry and their up-to-date presence in it.
