Job Summary:
The BYU Bean Life Science Museum (https://lsm.byu.edu) seeks a colleague who has demonstrated expertise in exhibit and graphic design and dedicated interests in museum communication and outreach. The successful applicant will supervise and develop projects across every touchpoint, including brand identity, print collateral, advertising (print and online), signage, presentations, and more. The role involves translating strategic goals into design solutions aligned with the Museum’s brand identity, promoting innovative design thinking, and collaborating with the exhibition design team. The position also includes supervising and training staff, including mentoring multiple teams of undergraduate students.
Education/Experience:
Required Degree: Bachelor’ s degree and two or more years of graphic design and/or museum-related design experience.
Preferred: Master’s of Fine Arts in graphic design or other closely related design/arts program and four or more years of graphic design and/or museum-related design experience. Certification in interpretative planning.
Required Skills:
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and other design software.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Products.
- Experience with Digital Painting and Drawing with Tablet.
- Capable in Traditional pen and paper drawing and/or painting.
- Knowledgeable of Color Theory.
- Experience with Data Management for digital assets.
- Able to use Communication Software (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord, or GQues).
- Capable of General Project Management.
- Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
- Ability to supervise and mentor others including undergraduate students.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiar with 3D design software (Sketchup, Blender, Maya).
- Competent in digital photography.
- Experience with document layout for publishing.
- Basic skills in video editing.
- Basic skills in webpage design.
- Experience with museum exhibit design.
- Experience with interpretive planning.
Applicants should attach a cover letter describing their professional and academic preparation, and their experience with graphic design and applications in museum outreach and communication. Applicants are required to provide a portfolio showcasing their relevant graphic design experience. They should also attach a current CV, and a statement of management and teaching philosophy that includes approaches to training and mentoring undergraduate students, including those from underserved populations.
Applicant statements should detail how their supervisory mentoring experiences can support the success of students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the life sciences. The successful applicant will have the ability to work independently and productively in exhibits graphics and interpretive planning while proficiently working as part of a larger team. The applicant should have demonstrated the ability to inspire undergraduate mentees and manage teams of students working on diverse aspects of compelling exhibits.
