Job Description—
This is a key position in the museum, responsible for the day-to-day operations (exhibit maintenance: lighting, repair, in-painting, detail cleaning, etc.), care of museum objects through design and fabrication of display mounts, and assisting Head of Exhibits and Curators to improve existing displays, to design and build new visitor experiences and/or traveling exhibitions, and to install temporary exhibits—in support of the Museum’s Strategic Plan. This position may also include fabrication assistance to the Education Department and Collections & Research (e.g., archival mounts).
Duties:
- Daily maintenance of the museum’s exhibits (lighting, repairs, etc.)
- Construction of new permanent and temporary exhibits, cases, and educational items.
- Design and fabrication of object display & archival mounts
- Unpacking, installation, take-down, and crating of temporary/rental exhibits.
- Maintenance and repair of shop equipment
- Inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment.
Job Requirements—
Required Education: GED/ High School Grad,or equivalent combination of education/job related experience, AND:
- 12-36 months of experience in an exhibit fabrication shop or similar
Skills:
- Knowledge in the proper use and fabrication of a wide range of “object-safe” materials.
- Skills in machining, carving, cutting, finishing, molding, casting, and other methods and techniques used in the construction of museum props and exhibits.
- Knowledge of shop practices for wood, metal, and plastics.
- Use of a variety of 2D and 3D design software packages. (SketchUp, AutoCAD, Etc.)
- Knowledge of Museum best practices for object handling, packing, mount making, etc.
- Comfortable in the use of heavy machinery for lifting and access, such as fork-trucks, scissor lifts, and boom lifts.
- Basic proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Able to produce work from technical/shop drawings required.
- The ability to think laterally and be an effective problem solver.
- Knowledge in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in regards to chemicals and audio, physical and respiratory safety.
- Familiarity with fabrication machinery, power tools, and construction processes
- Ability to work with a variety of different people, to work well under time constraints, and in stressful conditions.

- Must be able to work in high places using a lift or a ladder
Department Preferences:
- Working knowledge of InDesign
- Familiarity with mechanical and electronic device production helpful.
- Use of a 3-axis CNC machine
- Familiar with the laser cutting/etching of plastics
- Four-year undergrad degree in Studio Art, Museum Studies, or similar
