The Geoscience Collection at the NM Museum of Natural History and Science is looking for a Geoscience Collections Specialist. The Geoscience Collection houses fossils of vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants, as well as rocks and minerals, although vertebrate paleontology is the predominant collection.
Job Description
Why does the job exist?
This position will be responsible for the maintenance and management of the Geoscience collections by providing expert physical care; access to collections through loans for visitors; and responding to inquiries in their area of expertise. This position will also contribute to exhibitions/public programs, work closely with curators in the department and maintain an electronic database of all specimens in the collection and associated metadata.
How does it get done?
This position will manage Geoscience collections to organize and maintain the collection while overseeing the care of specimens in accordance with museum standards. The position will also maintain and develop an up-to-date electronic database following curatorial scheduling; participate in museum public programs to educate the public about the value of Geoscience collections; and assist museum staff/visiting researchers with access to specimens for scholarly and exhibit purposes. The position may also be involved in field collecting of specimens in coordination with curators, students or volunteers at the museum.
