Function
This Sessional Committee was established by President Norris in the 2012-2013 annual cycle to review the functioning of SPNHC committes and other entities that report to SPNHC Council and membership.
Leadership and Composition
The committee is chaired by former President of SPNHC. Members include five SPNHC members with knowledge of functions, goals, and objectives of the Society.
Duties
The intention of this work is to ensure that each committee or other group is functioning as well as possible, maximizing the skills of its members, and achieving its goals. Furthermore, by reviewing existing documentation across the spectrum of the Society’s activities over the course of 5 years as well as leveraging the complete updating of the Leadership Manual, it is hoped that this Committe’s input can facilitate synergy among committees with closely aligned objectives while helping to eliminate redundant efforts. To that end, the Committee’s five members have reviewed the following documents: The 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 ABM packages, Minutes from the 2013 and 2012 ABM and from the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Council Meetings, the newly updated Leadership Manual, the SPNHC 2013 Strategic Plan, the SPNHC website and assorted documents produced by individual committees, such as the Conference Guidelines. After extensive review of these resources, Committee members shared their independent observations by email. The content of these observations was massaged into several documents that were shared and discussed with President Norris and President-Elect Bentley at the 2013 meetings in Rapid City, South Dakota. At that time, the Committee was asked to continue and expand its evaluation for another year. During the year, the Committee submitted a short article for the Fall SPNHC Newsletter about its activities. It has also played a strong role in pushing for the completion of submissions to the Leadership Manual with all but one committee (Finance) fulfilling this task. The Committee has revisited its previous recommendations, reviewed the updated Leadership Manual entries, and considered other options for evaluating governance efficiency. Given the fact that another year of activities has nearly concluded, the Committee will also review the 2014 ABM package before completing its documentation. We will meet with the President and President-Elect at the 2014 SPNHC Meetings in Cardiff, Wales to share observations and discuss recommendations.
