Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced professional in the field of collections care and conservation to lead our Collections department, whose work is focused on cultural objects and collections housed in all sizes and types of repositories worldwide. As a Department Head, you will lead a team engaged in research, field activities designed to test new methodologies in real-world settings, education and training in the form of courses and workshops, and the creation of materials for dissemination.

Reporting to the director of the Conservation Institute, you will be a member of the GCI’s senior leadership team, planning our strategic priorities and implementing programs in the context of overall institutional objectives. As a Department Head, you will have responsibility for the management, direction, vision, long-range planning, projects, operations, and budget of a department with a staff of approximately 10 people. Departmental staff include conservators, experts in the art and science of teaching, and administrative professionals—together they have strengths in collections care, preventive conservation, conservation of modern and contemporary art and decorated surfaces, and project administration and management.

Major Job Responsibilities

You will work with departmental staff to develop and implement programs and new areas of work that address current and emerging challenges in the field of conserving movable heritage and build upon departmental strengths, as well as oversee continued implementation of existing initiatives. Together, you will conduct research, case studies, education and training in a variety of forms, and create and disseminate information from didactic materials to technical guidelines and policy documents. You and departmental staff will work collaboratively on interdisciplinary projects with colleagues in other GCI departments, across the Getty, and in the conservation community. As a Department Head, you will represent the GCI in the international conservation community and forge relationships with institutions to ensure that our activities respond to challenges encountered by conservation professionals worldwide.

Working closely with other members of our senior leadership team, you will contribute to long‐range organizational planning and the establishment of strategic priorities.  You will actively oversee and manage departmental operations, budgets, and staff to ensure that administrative policies, practices, and guidelines are followed

Qualifications

A post-graduate degree (e.g. Master’s degree, PhD) in conservation or related discipline is required.  A minimum of 15 years of professional project management experience related to movable cultural heritage conservation, including a minimum of 10 years of experience managing budgets and supervising people, are required. Authorship of multiple publications relating to cultural heritage conservation research is required.
