The Cambridge University Herbarium is seeking a full-time Curator.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, organising and developing the Herbarium, its collections, services and profile. The Herbarium holds a scientifically and historically important collection of 1.1 million specimens of vascular plants, bryophytes, algae and fungi, together with an 8,000 photographic slide collection, 6,000+ book collection and other archives.
The Curator is the first point of contact for visitors to the Herbarium, facilitating use of the collections for research, teaching and outreach. They manage research and loan requests. They lead on operational matters concerning collections development. Their scientific knowledge enables them to identify gaps in the collection which they will address through collaboration with other herbaria/plant collectors. Their technical knowledge will ensure the collections are preserved and stored appropriately for future study.
The Curator trains and manages a team of regular volunteers and occasional specialist staff.
A key part of this new role is fundraising to secure the future operation of the Herbarium. The Curator will take the lead in writing grant applications, initiating fundraising activities, and developing relationships with potential donors. They will maintain and develop links with the Gatsby Foundation, Sainsbury Lab Cambridge, Department of Plant Sciences and Cambridge University Botanic Garden, amongst others.
The appointee will have a first degree in a related discipline. A postgraduate museum-based or botanical qualification, or equivalent experience, is desirable, together with an understanding of the ethical considerations involved in the management and care of herbarium collections. Proven fundraising experience will be advantageous.
We anticipate holding interviews on 29 and 30 June.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
