Overview

The TENN Herbarium (http://tenn.bio.utk.edu) is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented individual to join our department as the Herbarium Project Manager. This key team member will oversee all regular project operations for the NSF-funded Digitization TCN project; Building a global consortium of bryophytes and lichens: keystones of cryptobiotic communities (GLOBAL).

The Herbarium Project Manager (HPM) reports to the Project Lead of GLOBAL, TENN Herbarium Director, Dr. Jessica M. Budke. The HPM will work in close collaboration with the Project Lead, Technical Leads, and Executive Committee to integrate tasks and products into the overall project workflow. The HPM will facilitate communication and ensure that the data mobilization needs of the project are met, i.e. coordinating progress reports and communication between participating institutions; providing quality control and assessing progress by reviewing data; participating in bi-monthly meetings and training workshops; administering data analytics, generating visualization graphics, and writing technical reports submitted to NSF; providing regular announcements and progress reports to the GLOBAL Executive Committee, External Advisory Committee, and members of the participating institutions; and managing the GLOBAL website. In addition, the HPM will also oversee a team of students and volunteers to image and database the non-North American bryophyte and lichen specimens at the TENN herbarium.

The TENN herbarium houses over 640,000 plant and fungal specimens and is one of the largest collections in the southeastern United States. The herbarium supports research focusing on taxonomy, systematics, invasive species, conservation of rare plants/fungi, and field botany/mycology. Duties and Responsibilities
Will include but are not limited to:

  1. Oversee the day-to-day project management, including the development of workflow documentation to facilitate data scheduling, prioritizing, and reporting on digitization activity for participating institutions.
  2. Facilitate communication among project participants at meetings and via virtual communication, including email and project management software.
  3. Track, analyze, and graphically visualize the digitization and outreach progress of participating institutions for project reports.
  4. Refine the project timeline and identify and resolve bottlenecks in the project’s workflow.
  5. Generate whole-project quarterly and annual reports.
  6. Be aware of non-GLOBAL TCN activities and identify possible paths for collaboration or shared engagements.
  7. Serve as liaison to iDigBio in digitization activities.
  8. Manage the GLOBAL website to share plant information with internet users worldwide.
  9. Hire, train, schedule, and supervise members of the public as herbarium volunteers and undergraduate student curation technicians to image and database the non-North American bryophyte and lichen specimens at the TENN herbarium.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree and two-three years of work experience or Master’s degree, from an accredited university in Biology, Museum Studies, Archeology, Anthropology, History or related field is required.
  2. Previous natural history collections experience (1-3 years), including experience with the process of specimen digitization and databasing is required.
  3. Experience in large-scale project management and associated computer software, including budgets is preferred.
  4. Experience coordinating geographically dispersed teams is preferred.
  5. Strong and outgoing interpersonal communication skills with the ability to lead a team of student assistants and volunteers to complete specimen digitization projects are required.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication, including experience writing technical reports, is required.
  7. Proficiency with computer software (e.g., Word, Excel, Photoshop, Dreamweaver) is required.
  8. Sound reasoning, analytical thought, attention to detail, creativity, high levels of organization, and innovation in solving minor problems that occur day to day are required.

This is a 3-year, full-time (12-month) position with health and retirement benefits. Initial appointment for 6 months, starting as early as September 2020, with extension pending positive performance evaluations. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
