Invertebrate Zoology Collections Manager

Published: July 31, 2018    Collections Manager, Jobs

Expired

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is seeking a Collection Manager in Invertebrate Zoology. This is a full time, exempt position. Responsible for the continued development and use of these collections, being predominantly marine and terrestrial mollusks, that contain over 3 million specimens. Position will also manage holdings of other invertebrate phyla, with the exception of insects. We seek an energetic individual who will promote the accessibility of these collections through ongoing digitization efforts and through the Museum’s nature education programs, exhibits and science outreach.

Located in the coastal town of Santa Barbara, renowned for its Mediterranean climate, the Museum was founded over 100 years ago. It has a long established, strong tradition in collection based research with many of its collections being ranked both nationally and internationally. Our largest holdings are mollusks from the eastern and tropical Pacific and western North America with historical specimens dating to the 1850s. This resource has been built based on the quality of specimen data and today contains many hidden assets that need to be made more accessible. During the past 50 years it has grown by actively seeking personal collections from both amateur and professional malacologists, who have specialized in field work and have been meticulous in their record keeping.

Minimum requirements include a MS in invertebrate zoology, malacology, or commensurate experience; multi-year expertise with museum collections and management techniques. Familiarity with collections database software, such as SPECIFY, is most highly desirable. A record of collections-based research demonstrating taxonomic experience is also sought.

Candidate should be a good communicator and enthusiastic interpreter of invertebrate zoology to the public and have experience with grant writing for collection management and field work.

Salary DOE. Please submit (1) letter of interest; (2) current CV with list of publications, and up to three PDFs; (3) names of three references to Human Resources Department, SB Museum of Natural History, 2559 Puesta del Sol Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. Electronic transmission preferred: hr@sbnature2.org
