Job Description

The Idaho Museum of Natural History is seeking a motivated, organized, detail-oriented individual to join our staff as the Life Sciences Collections Manager, with an emphasis in the Ray J Davis Herbarium. This key team member oversees the day-to-day management, preservation, and accessibility of the herbarium (ca. 80,000 specimens) and other, smaller (mammal, bird, herpetology, fish, insect) biodiversity collections. The Collections Manager reports to the Museum Director and works with the other Museum collections staff to plan and implement Division goals, priorities, and programs that promote research, teaching and public interest in the life sciences and use of the collections. The Collections Manager also develops and participates in both internal and external Museum activities and outreach events, such as public programs, fundraising efforts, and exhibit planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement Museum policies and procedures for maintenance and preservation of the collections
  • Develop, update and implement Division policies, procedures and collection-specific protocols
  • Specimen preparation, maintenance and organization; record keeping and digitization; and database management
  • Provide taxonomic identification of specimens and assessment of their associated data for accuracy and historical context, including upgrades to specimen identifications and nomenclature
  • Hire, train, and supervise collections personnel, including students and volunteers, to carry out tasks such as mounting, filing, imaging, databasing, and georeferencing specimens
  • Process all incoming and outgoing specimens and/or materials including, donations, exchanges, loans, and gifts
  • Lead and/or collaborate in field collection efforts, such as the Annual Idaho Botanical Foray
  • Work with the Education staff to develop and implement informal education programming around the Life Sciences
  • Facilitate and oversee visits by researchers, students and the public using the collections
  • Participate in broader education and public program activities of the Museum including but not limited to tours for the public, general museum outreach, and exhibits
  • Coordinate with development staff on fund-raising opportunities; help write collections-improvement grants for curation, accessibility, and preservation of Life Science collections
  • Willingness to travel, work some evenings and weekends
  • Perform other duties related to Life Sciences collections as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Biology, or related life science
  • At least one (1) year experience in collections management
  • Background in plant identification, taxonomy, and field botany
  • Ability to bend, lift, carry, and climb with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Biology, or related life science
  • Experience in plants from the western United States
  • Demonstrated experience in education and outreach

Additional Information

Salary will be between $51,000 – $53,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
