Primary Purpose

The Idaho Museum of Natural History is seeking a motivated, organized, detail-oriented individual to join our staff as the Life Sciences Collections Manager, with an emphasis in the Ray J Davis Herbarium. This key team member oversees the day-to-day operations of the herbarium (ca. 80,000 specimens) and other, smaller (mammal, bird, herpetology, fish, insect) biodiversity collections. Responsibilities include specimen preparation, maintenance and organization, record keeping and digitization, monitoring specimen inflow/outflow, and facilitating collection use by students, researchers and the public. The Collections Manager participates in both internal and external Museum activities and outreach events, such as public programs, fundraising efforts, and exhibit planning. In addition, the Collections Manager trains and leads a team of student and volunteer assistants in specimen curation, digitization and outreach projects. The Collections Manager works with the Life Sciences Division Curator and Affiliate Curators to plan and implement division goals, priorities, and programs.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the day-to-day management, preservation, and accessibility of the biodiversity collections.
  2. Work cooperatively with other Collection Managers and museum staff to achieve the highest level of collection care and productivity.
  3. Hire, train, and supervise collections personnel, including students and volunteers, to carry out tasks such as mounting, filing, imaging, databasing, and georeferencing specimens.
  4. Process all incoming and outgoing specimens including, donations, exchanges, loans, and gifts.
  5. Organize and collaborate in field collection efforts.
  6. Provide taxonomic identifications of specimens and assess their associated data for accuracy and historical context, including promoting continuous upgrades to specimen identifications and nomenclature.
  7. Facilitate visits by researchers, students and the public using the collections.
  8. Participate in education and other public program activities of the Museum including, but not limited to, tours for the public, training volunteers, Life Sciences education programs and exhibits.
  9. Coordinate with development staff on fundraising opportunities; help write collections-improvement grants for curation, accessibility, and preservation of Life Sciences collections.
  10. Available to work some evenings and weekends.
  11. Perform other duties related to Life Sciences collections as assigned.
  12. Special requirement; ability to bend, lift, carry and climb.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Biology, or related life science
Demonstrated experience working with collections
Demonstrated experience in plant identification, taxonomy, or field botany
 
Preferred Qualifications

MS or PhD in Biology, or related life science
Experience in plants from the western United States
Previous experience in collections management
Previous experience in fundraising
Previous experience in education and outreach
