DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Marine Biology Research Division (MBRD) consists of research laboratories in the fields of cell and developmental biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, microbiology and physiology of marine organisms. More than 20 laboratories. Cell and developmental biology: algal biofuels, biochemistry of fertilization and embryogenesis of sea urchins, developmental genetics of amphioxus (Branchiostoma), evolution of developmental patterning, functional genomics, how embryos sense and defend against environmental stressors, innate immunity in teleosts. Evolution Biology and Ecology: evolutionary genetics, genetic structure of invertebrate populations and speciation, invertebrate and fish taxonomy and biogeography, evolution and paleobiology of colonial life, microbial ecology and community structure, phytoplankton ecology, coral reef ecology, evolution and development (EvoDevo), conservation biology. Microbiology: ecology of marine virsues, bacteria and phytoplankton, and the roles these organisms play in marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles, microbial symbioses with marine invertebrates, new compounds from cyanobacteria, microbial adaptations to pressure and temperature extremes and other environmental stresses in the marine environment, geomicrobiology, bacteria and bioremediation. Physiology: respiration and energy metabolism, biomechanics and locomotion, sensory biology and bioluminescence, response to osmotic stress (ion transport and acid/base regulation), epithelial physiology, mitochondrial function, physiology of hydro thermal vent community animals.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, The Marine Invertebrate Technician independently perform a wide variety of standard repetitive laboratory experimental procedures, coordinating and helping to manage the activities of a diverse marine invertebrates laboratory. Perform routine DNA extraction and amplification from a wide range of preserved and frozen marine invertebrate tissues, amplify regions of the DNA using PCR and prepare and send out the products for sequencing externally. Troubleshoot and check quality of sequences. Perform Next Generation library preps. Conduct evaluation of the DNA sequence data and assess sequence identity. Assemble the sequences using Geneious software, for subsequent phylogenetic and population genetic analyses by academic supervisor. Prepare samples for metagenomic sequencing. Upload sequences to GenBank. Coordinate with collaborators, organize the sequences and track progress via spreadsheets and databases. Assist in coordinating research efforts of undergraduate and graduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one (1) year of laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of invertebrate phyla and classes, particularly Annelida. Experience with marine invertebrate specimen processing.
  • Background in molecular biological procedures including lab experience. Experience with DNA and RNA extractions, specifically with small marine animals.
  • Experience preparing samples for Next Generation sequencing.
  • Experience in the use of sequencing software such as Geneious.
  • Proven experience in general lab protocols and lab safety procedures. Skill in the use of laboratory equipment. Experience using microscopes.
  • Demonstrated skill in the evaluation and screening of DNA sequence data via BLAST and demonstrated ability to assemble sequence datasets for subsequent phylogenetic and population genetic analyses.
  • Knowledge of phylogenetic and population genetics.
  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated experience using Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience in use of computerized literature databases and online library resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with formalin and ethanol and other hazardous reagents.
  • Basic knowledge of chemical regulations for safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot effectively when problems arise with PCR amplification or sequencing.
  • Skill in maintaining clear and concise records with strict attention to detail.
  • Ability to carefully follow oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
