The University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology is hiring a Museum Collection Manager for the invertebrate collections.

Responsibilities

Collection Organization – Organize and re-house invertebrate research and teaching specimens, including new, incoming, and older collections that are in need of conservation and improved storage.  Improvements include use of new archival materials and final transitioning to a new collection facility.

Collection Use – Schedule and monitor use of research collection by local and visiting researchers.  Process loans to be sent to other universities and museums and reintegrate loan returns.  Loans may involve production and shipment of high quality casts, if shipping of original specimens is not possible.

Database Management – Maintain specimen and locality databases with the goal of upgrading database systems and improving online access to select specimen information.

Educational Activities – Work with faculty curators, students, and counterparts in other units to plan projects using collections, facilitate use of collections in teaching, and improve labeling of specimens.  Handle requests from students and the general public to identify fossils and to answer questions transmitted to the museum by email, mail, or telephone.  Serve as the liaison for the Friends of the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology, a dedicated group of avocational paleontologists associated with the Museum.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of a M.S. in appropriate field.  Experience in museum practices is necessary.  Cataloging and classifying experience is necessary.  Prior experience in computer database management is essential.  Candidate must have a broad understanding of biological systematics and paleobiology.

Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications – In view of the high level interaction with and service to faculty and graduate students, we prefer that candidates have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field.  Advanced training in paleobiology is desirable.
