The QTI Group has partnered with the Milwaukee Public Museum to recruit their next President & CEO. The next President & CEO of the Milwaukee Public Museum will lead the organization through a critical and exciting time, as the Museum executes its vision for a new facility in which it can better meet its mission to serve the community, state and region as an iconic 21st century cultural, research, and educational institution. The CEO, reporting to the MPM, Inc. Board of Directors, will lead the executive team and staff to refine and meet established strategic goals, participate in significant fund development, and provide guidance over new programming, exhibits and projects. This leader will also serve as the liaison with the county and other community partners, as well as build and maintain relationships to collaboratively achieve the Museum’s vision.

Responsibilities: 

Strategic Management

  • Promotes an organizational culture that fosters passion for the Museum’s mission, collaboration, open and frequent communication, teamwork, and a common organizational vision.
  • Reporting to the Board, the CEO ensures that Board members are well-informed and positioned to provide the support and commitment needed for MPM to thrive, and works collaboratively with them to achieve set goals.
  • Provides oversight of the strategic plan and the planning process to identify future direction for the organization, including leading the refinement, implementation, and successful execution of the annual operational plan.
  • Leverages and coordinates resources to ensure strategic alignment of resources and staff.

Resource Development

  • Supports the VP of Development in overseeing fund development planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources and establishing strategies to identify and develop relationships with individual, corporate and/or foundation donors/funders.
  • Follows through on opportunities to develop funding, building and maintaining relationships with donors to allow for the continuation of current successful programs and for the growth of new infrastructure, research, and programming, including a much-needed new facility.
  • Assures management and attainment of resources necessary to ensure the financial operations of the Museum are conducted with integrity as approved by the Board of Directors and in accordance with county laws.

Community Connections

  • Serves as the public face of the Museum and steward of the mission, promoting the goals and mission of the Museum throughout the community.
  • Engages and inspires others to better understand how MPM preserves and protects our natural and cultural diversity, effectively communicating how and why that is important to the broader community.
  • Successfully cultivates and maintains relationships with external partners of MPM, including the County, donors, collaborative partners in business, education and research.
  • Works with other non-profit, government, corporate and strategic partners to collaborate on ways to increase the value of MPM in the community, region, and state.

Organizational Management

  • Leads and inspires a high-performing team and ensures all staff members are supported to achieve organizational results.
  • Maintains accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors, in partnership with the Sr VP of Operations and Finance, including oversight of operational and capital expenditure budgets, cost control, risk management, financial reporting and financial planning.
  • Supports the Director of Human Resources in managing labor negotiations with Museum staff, particularly concerning contract renewals.
  • Guides, supports and serves the staff and Board of Directors in establishing goals and developing policies, procedures, budgets, and programs that fulfill the mission of the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Profound enthusiasm and passion for the mission of the Milwaukee Public Museum, and a core belief in the value of museums to a community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to compellingly communicate the vision and value of the Museum across a variety of key stakeholder groups, building relationships across business and philanthropic communities, county leaders, the academic community, the public, and the media.
  • Substantive experience in successful fund development, donor relations, advancement and philanthropy with a consultative, collaborative and strategic approach. Experience leading a capital campaign desired, but not required.
  • A strong leader who is both visible and approachable to staff, board and community, portraying humility, honesty, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, resilience, and a strong work ethic, especially in times of change and challenge.
  • Strong financial and operational acumen; direct experience with budget development/management and P&L oversight.
  • Ability to foster a healthy organizational culture, with the management skills to encourage teamwork and collaboration to meet goals, and the emotional intelligence to inspire, support, and develop staff.
  • Knowledge of business, politics and academic sectors, to successfully communicate, build, and sustain relationships within corporate, academic, scientific and public spheres.
  • Previous experience in museum leadership desired, but not required.
  • Willingness to spend time and effort participating in community-wide events as the face of the Museum.
  • A passion for continual learning and innovative strategies, while respecting the history and culture of the organization and the community. A proven penchant for creatively evolving to meet the needs of the future, and being able to successfully lead those new initiatives.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and expertise; experience managing labor relations desired.
  • A solid understanding of Milwaukee’s culture and the greater community.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A or B. S.) from an accredited college; advanced degree desired.
