The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 2 position in the New York State Museum’s (NYSM) Research and Collections Division.  The Research and Collections Division is responsible for curation of New York State’s natural and cultural history collections. Under the supervision of the Director, Research and Collections Division, the incumbent of this position will serve as manager of the MIMSY XG database, an Oracle relational database that is used to inventory and track the Museum’s collections.  Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide on-site administration and technical support for database users, including monitor, identify and resolve database issues in MIMSY;
  • Schedule, coordinate and set up training sessions conducted by the MIMSY vendor, or other software vendors, as needed;
  • Coordinate MIMSY client installations, software upgrades and the installation of any peripheral devices or report writing software used in conjunction with MIMSY database systems;
  • Consult with Museum staff to determine collection database requirements;
  • Coordinate migration of NYSM data sets into MIMSY;
  • Prepare and manage the yearly MIMSY budget, vendor contracts and licensing and software support/service agreements;
  • Work with collection staff to develop database modules necessary to automate activities associated with the delivery of services, including loans, conservation treatments, damage reports and labels;
  • Work with curators and departmental database managers to maintain data integrity;
  • Work with museum staff to coordinate and implement regular updates of NYSM holdings to existing and future data-sharing agreements, including iDigBio, VertNet, GBIF, and other integrative databases;
  • Provide guidance on operational problems to Museum staff working with MIMSY, as needed; and
  • Supervise subordinate staff, as required.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in  biology, archaeology, anthropology, geology, paleontology, or related field of scientific inquiry AND three years of professional experience in collections database management.

Substitutions for the Qualifying Experience:

  • A master’s degree will substitute for one year of experience; OR
  • A doctoral degree will substitute for three years of experience.

This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance and other benefits.
