Departmental Overview:

The University and Jepson Herbaria are separately budgeted units within the Vice Chancellor of Research Office and are a member of the Berkeley Natural History Museums Consortium. They are located within the Valley Life Sciences Building. Both units are closely associated with the Department of Integrative Biology and, to a lesser extent the Department of Plant Biology and the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. The collections of the Herbaria are used by the campus, the international scientific community, and the general public for research, teaching, and public service.

The Jepson Herbarium specializes in the vascular plants of California and maintains many electronic resources related to the California flora (specimen data and educational content). Under the general direction of the Herbarium Director, and in coordination with the Jepson Curator, the Assistant Director for Outreach and Development, and the Biodiversity Informatics Manager, this position will assist in two specific programs of the Jepson Herbarium (1) the Jepson Flora Project and (2)

This new position will work 50% time with the Jepson Flora Project and 50% time with the Jepson Workshop program. 

Responsibilities:

Jepson Flora Project:

  • Assist Jepson Curator with Jepson eFlora revisionary efforts as needed (e.g., pull specimens, check keys, etc.).
  • Assist curator with updating the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN) after revisions of the Jepson eFlora.
  • Assist curator with maintaining an errata for the Jepson eFlora (including updates to distribution strings).
  • Test new eFlora pages looking for errors and omissions and review KeyBase updates and look for errors online.
  • Update illustrations after an eFlora revision (update the illustration files with new names and the text file of illustration names).
  • Work to resolve yellow flags and incorporate iNat observations in bioregion strings.
  • Become a regular editor of image content in CalPhotos (eFlora photo list).
  • Handle requests for annotation of specimens.
  • Take the lead resolving comments from the Consortium of California Herbaria CCH1 and CCH2.

Outreach:

  • Based on the needs of target audiences, plan and develop new educational programs.
  • Recruit instructors, work with vendors, and apply for necessary permits.
  • Implement up to 12 workshops per year (some remote) and manage volunteers and participants during workshops.
  • Programs are typically on weekends either on campus or in remote locations. Includes driving long distances, shopping for supplies, camping, hiking, and working with field station managers (sometimes in extreme environmental conditions).
  • Develop and manage program budgets.
  • Develop marketing materials (for both online campaigns and direct mail).
  • Must be aware of all campus regulations regarding risk management, entertainment, and travel and ensure compliance for the program and the vendors.
  • Host virtual workshops and virtual keying sessions (up to 6 per year).
  • Write scripts for Jepson Videos.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Social media posts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

Website:

  • For the workshop program, manage pages (basic html).
  • Look at UC/JEPS pages for broken links and outdated pages.
  • Edit Herbaria related Wikipedia pages (and wiki species pages).

Required qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of botany and floristics.
  • Knowledge of plant systematic principles and procedures, including botanical nomenclature.
  • Knowledge of curatorial protocols and techniques, herbarium networks, and data management.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with public outreach including field trips.
  • Experience with event management, including virtual events.

This is a full-time position and will be in-person on the UC Berkeley campus. It will also include weekends in the field with the workshop program.
