Position: Museum Specialist – Natural History Programming
Classification: Temporary (1 year), Full-Time
Salary: $50,000 – $55,000
Hours: 40 hours weekly
Supervisor: Executive Director

Position Summary:
The History Museum seeks a Museum Specialist in Natural History Programming. The successful candidate will help move the natural history collection currently housed at the Weis Earth Science Museum into the History Museum. The collection contains over 20,000 specimens/objects including rare paleontological and geological specimens. The Museum Specialist will oversee all aspects of the exhibition and public programming for the natural history collection on a day-to-day basis.
Essential Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in paleontology, geology, museum studies, or related field.
•2+ years of experience in organization, care and/or conservation of natural history specimens/collections.
•Experience with database software.
•Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
•Ability to effectively communicate the importance of natural history collections to the general public and academic community.
Desired Qualifications:
•Master’s degree in paleontology, geology, museum studies, or a related field.
•Working knowledge of international, federal, and state regulations governing the collection and use of specimens by museums.
•Evidence of Advanced, research-level expertise in paleontology, geology, biology, or natural history.
Education Programming:
•Develops and implements public education programming for K-12 students, life-long learners, and community partners.
•Coordinates educational activities including: strategic planning, project management, peer-to-peer collaborations, school visits, adult programming, and special events.
•Maintains an active working relationship with school administrators and teachers to develop quality programming based on feedback and curriculum standards.
•Creatively engages the community to increase public program attendance and revenues.
•Conducts research using primary and secondary sources to develop, implement, and enhance educational programming.
•Recruits and manages volunteers, interns, and seasonal staff to support programmatic offerings.
•Maintain a deep understanding of Wisconsin’s geological history.
Other:
•Participates actively in History Museum and community organization(s) committee work.
•Serves as a security contact capable of responding in an emergency.
•Accepts speaking engagements on behalf of the History Museum.
•Delivers excellent customer service.
•Ability to lift 40 lbs.
•A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
•Performs other duties as assigned.
