Natural History Museum Specialist at Eastern Tennessee State University

Job Summary:
Reports to the director of the Center of Excellence in Paleontology and the Head Curator. Museum Specialists represent highly trained individuals in the museum field that have specialized training and experience. This Museum Specialist position is essential to fulfill the following needs in the realm of paleontology at ETSU: digitization via 3D scanning, CT scanning, photogrammetry, and traditional photography; analysis and handling of digital data; management and organization of digital datasets; use of specialized 3D software (e.g., Mimics, PhotoScan); creates fossil casts using traditional methods, as well as 3D printers; painting fossil replicas; creating scientific illustrations and figures using traditional methods and software (e.g., Photoshop); prepares fossils, particularly microfossils; maintenance and upkeep of 3D printers; trains researchers and students to use 3D techniques and other methods; contributes to the content, design, fabrication, and installation of temporary and permanent exhibit; assists with paleontological excavations; supervises or advises volunteers and students in areas of specialization; assists curators with paleontological research projects; collaborates with researchers on some projects and publications; assists with museum exhibits; assists with museum outreach; and serves on museum committees.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • 3D scanning and printing
  • Software for analyzing 3D data (from CT analyses, scans, digitizers, and photogrammetry)
  • Molding, casting and painting replicas (creating high quality casts)
  • Paleontological excavation techniques
  • Specimen photography
  • Scientific illustration
  • Conservation and general preparation of museum specimens
  • Micropreparation techniques
  • Computerized curation/cataloging of collections and database management.
  • Systematics and taxonomy.

  • Demonstrated experience in molding, casting, and painting replicas for exhibit or research purposes

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in geosciences, biological sciences or related field
  • Specialized training or experience in museum curation, collections management, preparation, and micropreparation (minimum of 5 years)
  • Demonstrated experience working with CT data files
  • Demonstrated experience working with 3D Software and 3D printing
  • Training and/or experience with traditional scientific illustration (demonstrated art background)
  • Experience in photography and digital cameras
  • Demonstrated experience in molding, casting, and painting replicas for exhibit or research purpose
  • Demonstrated experience in excavating at a wide variety of fossil sites
  • Experience supervising excavations
  • Training or experience with exhibit design and maintenance
