The NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) Collections Assistant will work with the Illinois State Museum NAGPRA Team under the direction of the ISM’s Curator of Anthropology to examine archaeological materials in order to identify and segregate any materials from burial contexts; review, digitize, and organize primary archaeological documentation; verify collections match inventories and update inventories as necessary; maintain databases of materials subject to NAGPRA and make these available to Tribal consultants; and assist in rehousing materials as requested by consulting Tribes. Additional duties may include participating in NAGPRA consultation meetings and preparing information for Tribal consultants.

The NAGPRA Collections Assistant reports to the ISM’s Curator of Anthropology. This is full-time term position for a maximum of 2500 hours for 18 months from date of hire at a rate of $19.50 per hour.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, or related field is required. Must have at least three years of hands-on experience in archaeology collections work in a museum, university, or comparable setting. Experience with NAGPRA collections is preferred. Must have demonstrated ability to conduct research using primary documentation (e.g., field notes and photographs) and have excellent organizational skills. Experience creating and managing electronic databases required. Basic photography skills desired. Candidate must be able to work independently. Must be familiar with the goals of NAGPRA and understand the sensitive nature of working with such collections.

Employer: The NAGPRA Collections Assistant will be employed by the Illinois State Museum Society, the non-profit dedicated to supporting the Illinois State Museum. The individual will not be employed by the State of Illinois.

Salary: $19.50 per hour for a maximum of 2500 hours by June 30, 2023.
