Position Description: Naturalist/ Earth Camp Leader
Reporting to: VP Exhibitions and Programs
Purpose: The Staten Island Museum is seeking a part-time Naturalist/Earth Camp Leader to co-facilitate our outdoor education in our Summer Earth Camp program for children. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing nature-based activities and learning experiences in Staten Island (Park) locations. The Naturalist/Earth Camp Leader will serve as a team leader to ensure campers (ages 8-13) learn about and enjoy nature at this unique environmental travelling camp. The position schedule is 8am-4pm during two 2-week sessions (July 11- July 22 and July 25- August 5). Preparatory hours will include interviewing Jr. Staff, reviewing the daily activity menu, ordering materials, and visiting the locations with co-staff.
Goal: To fulfill the organization’s Mission: Founded in 1881, the Staten Island Museum, New York City’s only general interest museum, engages visitors with interdisciplinary exhibitions and educational programs that explore the dynamic connections between natural science, art and history based on its diverse collections and provide authentic experiences in the field and at the Museum.
Responsibilities: Include but not limited to the following:
- Encourage children ages 8-13 to become life-time naturalists via hands-on, informal science activities and exploration.
- Develop and lead Earth Camp science activities including: daily field explorations in a variety of green spaces with: natural science informal learning stops, find of the day, habitat understanding, as outlined in the daily menu/curriculum.
- Review/update daily program, education materials and activities related to the daily natural science lessons.
- Lead games that connect to summer learning and enjoyment.
- Mentor Sr. & Jr. Counselors to be active team members
- Work in concert with the camp Director and asst. director to ensure safety and excellence for our campers and staff.
- Relate to Parents, campers, and staff in a professional manner.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled or completed a Bachelor’s Degree program in one of the following areas: Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Field Natural History, Natural Resource Management, Geology, Botany, Marine Biology or related field
- Knowledge of Staten Island local flora and fauna.
- Physically fit; able to hike in the hot summer months.
- Experience as an outdoor environmental educator and/or summer camp staff Passionate interest in Staten Island’s natural landscape
- Ability to model curiosity and wonder about the natural world
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work well on a team and with diverse people
- Reliable and Mature
- Emergency Medical Certification is a plus
