General Statement of Duties
The Non-Live Collections Manager supports the mission of connecting people to nature through educational experiences by overseeing the museum’s non-live collections. This position focuses on utilizing the museum’s non-live collection to its fullest potential by looking for greater opportunities to display, maintain and improve the current collection while maintaining AAM standards and the educational needs of the museum. This position reports to the Education Director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Museum Studies or Collection Management preferred
  • Knowledge of American Alliance of Museum and its accreditation standards preferred
  • Computer skills: Microsoft and Google experience 
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to communicate enthusiasm for the museum and its collections
  • Ability to work well with volunteers

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be a positive, enthusiastic representative of the Virginia Living Museum mission to connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation.
  • Ensure the Museum maintains and upholds AAM accreditation standards. Coordinate the submission of accreditation documentation for AAM.
  • Manage the Collection Plan and goals to ensure forward movement. 
  • Manage the non-live collection state and federal permits.
  • Manage internal and external loans of collection items.
  • Work with the Advancement team to seek funding opportunities to support position and projects. 
  • Update and maintain Discovery Boxes designed for classroom use. 
  • Work with the education team to develop new educational programming to best utilize collections items. 
  • Repair current collection items as needed, research and upgrade collections.
  • Maintain current inventory of supplies and materials needed for collections.
  • Manage large scale preservation projects such as preserving/displaying Mastodon fossils.
  • Supervise daily tasks of preparator, collections volunteers, graduate fellows, and interns.
  • Expand and train the team of collections volunteers, interns, and fellows. 

Essential Job Requirements

  • Ability to work weekends for training, special events, and projects. 
  • Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and perceive detailed information through oral communication as well as have the ability to make the discrimination in sound. 
  • Must be physically capable of meeting the demands of the positions including standing and/or walking through the museum. 
  • Must be able to maintain focus in a distracting environment with continuous interruptions. 
  • Physical requirements include medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 points of force constantly to move objects. 
  • The position is subject to environmental conditions for activities occurring indoors or outdoors.
