Ornithology Collection Manager
Overview:
The collections manager of the LSUMNS bird division oversees day-to-day operations in order to ensure the maintenance, use, and growth of the ornithological collection. Responsibilities include processing incoming and outgoing loans, organizing and participating in collecting expeditions, preparation and integration of new specimens, organizing specimens, managing physical improvements and digitization projects, maintaining and improving specimen records in our Specify database, facilitating the use of the collection by researchers, training students and volunteers, contributing to outreach and education initiatives. Travel and work outside business hours are sometimes required. Taxonomic knowledge of birds is required. The collections manager of birds will report to the Curator of Birds.
Job Responsibilities:
80% Collection organization, integrity, and use: Ensures the organization and preservation of physical specimens (dry, wet, and frozen) by monitoring climate control, physical storage, and pest management. Runs the dermestid beetle colony. Manages specimen databases and record keeping, including field notes, permits, collections use, and other records. Manages collections use by processing loans and assisting visitors. Assists curators in preparing proposals for collection-improvement grants.
10% Collections growth: Contributes to collection growth through fieldwork and salvage networks.
10% Supervise collection workers: Supervise and train graduate and undergraduate collection assistants.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Museum Studies, or related field. 2 years of experience working in natural history collections.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Biology, Museum Studies, or related field and 4 years of experience working in natural history collections.
