The Research & Collections Division of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science is an active, field exploration and collections – based research team of scientists, preparators, and collections professionals. The Perot Museum has just established a dedicated Center of Excellence (COE) with focus
on research in Arctic Paleontology.
Although we are an “at will” employment state and reserve the right to end employment at any time/for any reason, this postdoctoral fellowship is for up to three years from the time of appointment. It is designed to advance the academic and professional training of the next generation of vertebrate
paleontologist by providing them with the funding and facilities to pursue specific, time – limited research projects in association with Museum scientists. Specifically, the postdoc will work within an international research group investigating Cretaceous Arctic continental ecosystems. You will be
expected to participate in field work in physically demanding, isolated conditions in order to supplement existing collections. The stipend is $60,000.00 per year with Museum benefits and professional development funds that may be used to attend a scholarly meeting, to travel to other institutions as necessary for scholarship, and/or for professional development activities. The position will report to and be supervised by the Chief Curator.
Qualifications
You must have a PhD in vertebrate paleontology received no more than 5 years before the deadline for applications. The work requires a high standard of English understanding and writing, a solid knowledge of vertebrate paleontology, and an ability to work efficiently and independently. You will also be expected to engage with the public as outreach programming is developed. Experience with remote paleontological field work is strongly advantageous.
Essential Physical Requirements
Many of the postdoc’s duties will entail extended periods of sitting, performing typical scholarly research, writing, and specimen handling. Must be capable of safely handling fragile specimens ranging from a few ounces to 50 lbs, and occasionally greater. The postdoc will be expected to engage in seasonal fieldwork, during which the will experience weeks of working in remote outdoor areas, walking and/or hiking in difficult terrain and carrying heavy loads, with the potential for encountering weather extremes.
