The Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) is seeking applications for the position of Research Curator of Cultural Collections, with a scientific program focused on Anthropology. Specifically, we are inviting candidates with expertise in environmental, cultural, and/or biological subfields within the broader Anthropology discipline. Specialization in indigenous cultures of the Midwest and associated collections is desirable. Under the general direction of and reporting to the Vice President/Academic Dean, the Research Curator, in a leadership role, plans, directs, implements and coordinates the activities of the Anthropology and History departments and projects to ensure the effectiveness and balance of collections, public service/education, exhibit programming, and scholarly research. Through strong initiative, this individual will ensure the highest work standards to promote the Milwaukee Public Museum as a world renowned museum in all areas of responsibility.
EXPECTATIONS:
- Plays a significant role in developing content for exhibits that will be designed for the MPM’s new facility (project is in progress), with a vision for the intersection of nature and culture.
- Participates in professional societies in field of expertise, including leadership roles as appropriate.
- Seeks funding for department-based research and participates in team research, including community science projects, as appropriate, within the Museum and in conjunction with other institutions.
- Collaborates with local universities and other institutions with regard to student participation in fieldwork and other research.
- Takes appropriate steps to have research integrated with the collection strengths of the department, as appropriate.
- Strives to make his/her program of scholarship as well as that of the department as a whole, nationally and internationally recognized in the field.
