Summary
The University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is hiring a Linux Systems Administrator to join a diverse team of professionals dedicated to successful advancement of educational and research activities. You will work with the Infrastructure team to create and support servers and provide other infrastructure services to Technology Services teams, college faculty and staff. This job offers hybrid work opportunities. You will report to the Infrastructure Manager in LSA Technology Services. The initial focus for this position will support LSA’s amazing Research Museum Collection Managers with a secondary focus on other LSA units across the College. The target salary range for this position is $64,000-$69,000.
TERM LIMITED OPPORTUNITY – Please note that this is a two year term limited opportunity with the potential for extension based on project need as well as funding support.
What You’ll Do
Production Support: Provide technical support and service restoration for infrastructure services provided by LSA Technology Services. The primary focus of this support will involve Linux servers supporting biological collection software applications. The work will also involve common database support tasks. In addition you will analyze, plan, and implement system maintenance, including backup and recovery strategies, software patches and upgrades. Monitor systems for availability, error conditions, adequate disk space allocation, backup integrity, and performance. Perform root-cause analysis by investigating, analyzing, and resolving system problems, poor performance, and error conditions.
Projects: Collaborate with and gather technical requirements with different teams to provide Infrastructure solutions for the College of LSA. Working with technical peers across the University, find or develop solutions, while being mindful of IT sourcing options. Develop and document procedures and maintenance plans for the team.
Proactive Administration: Collaborate with teams and advise on technical features and processing options. Contribute to system enhancements by identifying and quantifying customer requirements, delineating the gaps between customer requirements and the capabilities of existing technology. Recommend improvements in current processes.
Professional Development: Stay current with relevant advances in IT. This could include: on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, researching, and testing. Develop and follow best practices and share knowledge.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Linux Systems Administrator, with demonstrated knowledge to use appropriate technology tools to perform day-to-day administration tasks (such as backup, restore, failover, log interpretation and performance monitoring) for servers
- Minimum of 1 year of experience with a common database platform like MySQL or SQL
- Minimum of 1 year of experience with programming languages or scripting languages like Bash, Python or PHP. Examples will be requested
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot difficult issues and ability to apply problem-solving skills with a focus on process improvement and automation
- Familiarity with security and monitoring best practices
