California State University Long Beach is hiring a new Vertebrate Technician; this position essentially serves as our Vertebrate Collections Manager. We have almost 40,000 vertebrate specimens. The hire would manage the teaching and research collections, help set up organismal diversity labs, and work with faculty on special projects. We will be receiving entirely new collections cabinets in Winter 2023. The candidate would hopefully start sometime before the end of summer in time for the Fall term in August. Job Summary

The Vertebrate Technician will support services for the vertebrate and insect collections in the Department of Biological Sciences and to the faculty members using these collections in teaching and research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up material in lecture and laboratory courses utilizing these collections
  • Manage the vertebrate and insect collections and database of the Department of Biological Sciences. This includes birds, mammals, fishes, amphibians, reptiles and insects as preserved specimens, both dry and fluid
  • Provide technical support for all faculty members and visitors who use these collections in teaching and research
  • Work with the safety office of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics to ensure safety compliance for these collections
  • Conduct outreach programs and interact with CSULB students, faculty members, administrators, and other staff members and community members outside CSULB

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency with computers sufficient to maintain collections database and website.

• Sufficient manual dexterity and proficiency with small tools to prepare zoological specimens, especially study skins of birds and mammals.

• The ability to apply knowledge and skills to a broad range of animals, including a willingness to learn new skills and applications and to acquire training as needed.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university’s commitment to a “vision of excellence.”

Education and Experience

Equivalent to three (3) years of academic or professional laboratory experience in vertebrate biology required. BA or BS degree in biological sciences or related discipline preferred. MS in biological sciences preferred. Experience in entomology desirable. Experience preparing specimens for scientific collections preferred.
