Description:
Under the direction of and reporting to the President, the Vice-President/Academic Dean coordinates, manages and provides effective leadership with regard to the Milwaukee Public Museum‘s central functions of curatorial scholarship and research, collections management, registration, exhibits, education and public programming. This position will create synergies between curatorial and public programming through coordinated efforts to enhance the overarching scientific educational mission of the museum. This position also will focus on building meaningful and lasting partnerships within the community. Mission critical responsibilities include:
- Effectively oversees all functions of curatorial scholarship and research, collections management, registration, exhibits, education and public programming operations of the Museum
- Provides strategic direction so as to position the museum to function effectively in the 21st Century
- Oversees effective integration of the Education and C & R Departments related to all programming
- Cultivates relationships and partnerships with universities and other organizations that enhance the programming, collections and research activities at MPM
- Advances the appointments of Adjunct Curators, Research Fellowships, Teaching Fellowships and Research Associates
- Develops annual work plans, budgets and goals for Collections, Research, Exhibits and Education Departments or Sections
- Oversees compliance with and recommends necessary revisions to the MPM Collections Policy, Repatriation Policy and related documents
- Ensures compliance with MPM, AAM and other applicable codes of professional conduct or ethics
- Identifies and develops opportunities for externally funded scientific initiatives
Qualifications:
A Doctoral degree (Ph. D.) in one of the Museum’s disciplines of study (biology, environmental anthropology, or paleobiology preferred) and 10 or more years experience within a museum scientific or related area including grant-funded research, interaction with trustees, donors, the public and various governmental and non-governmental agencies. Proven executive leadership and managerial skills and knowledge of business and budget planning are essential.
Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to lecture on and discuss complex topics and issues in a pleasing and understandable manner for audiences outside of field of expertise, including the general public.
