The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago seeks a laboratory manager for its new X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) Facility. Join our vibrant research community at a world-renowned institution focused on collections-based natural history research in biology, anthropology, paleontology, earth, and planetary sciences.

Our non-clinical XCT laboratory will include an NSI X5000 and an NSI X25 XCT scanner, and an image processing facility with workstations and software for data processing, visualization, and analysis. The facility is expected to be operational in the autumn of 2024

Duties & Responsibilities:

The laboratory manager will oversee the operations of the Museum’s XCT facility. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining equipment to ensure full functionality.
  • Conducting data acquisition and analysis for XCT users.
  • Enhancing procedures for tomographic data acquisition and reconstruction.
  • Assisting and training users in basic XCT data analysis, data acquisition, and temporary CT data storage.
  • Collaborating with the museum’s Information Technology and scientific leadership to deliver data to users, manage user billing, and develop workflow and data management procedures.
  • Participate in the Museum’s outreach and education events, as needed, helping to inspire the public and the next generation of scientists.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in geological, biological, or archeological sciences, or engineering.
  • Two years of experience in the acquisition and/or research utilization of CT data.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and time-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in geological, biological, or archeological sciences, or engineering.
  • Experience in the operation of CT instrumentation and CT data processing, and a strong computational background.
  • Initiative to attend selected CT conferences and workshops if approved.
  • The option to engage in independent research and pursue independent funding is possible and negotiable up to the 20% equivalent of the regular work time.
