Programming and Outreach Educator
Encourage study of and appreciation for specimens, artifacts, works of art, performances, and other research and creative endeavors that collectively represent the full breadth of scientific and humanities research, artistic form, and achievement at a level of quality commensurate with the teaching, research, and outreach missions of The University of Iowa. Incumbents in this job family typically are involved in the development and delivery of interpretive programming to support education about and appreciation of the arts, sciences, and humanities. Requires knowledge of education, art history, museum studies, American studies, studio arts, anthropology, archaeology, paleontology, biology, or other fields.

About the University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums
Together, Old Capitol Museum and the Museum of Natural History form the University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums (UIPM).  The UIPM seeks a qualified applicant for the position of Education Assistant. This position includes responsibility in the areas of science- and humanities-focused education and programming at the UIPM. The Old Capitol Museum seeks to educate the university, local, and national communities on the continuing significance of the humanities. It is an invigorated and distinguished building serving as a place for public outreach initiatives, educational programming, exhibitions, and academic scholarship.  The Museum of Natural History’s permanent exhibits focus strongly on zoology, paleontology, and anthropology, but programming spans a broader range of science-related disciplines.  The ideal candidate will have experience in museum education combined with excitement about sharing a wide range of topics with the public.

Position Qualifications
Education or Equivalency Required
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications

  • 6 months to one-year supervisory experience
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute events, including the ability to identify and coordinate resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, collaboration and cooperation are essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the mission of a research university and the mission and functions of a university museum.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Word, Power Point and Excel).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in museum studies, education, or related field
  • Direct experience with planning, designing, and/or delivering educational programming in a museum setting.
  • Ability to apply policies and practices for evaluating and assessing programs
  • Ability to research best practices and provide recommendations
  • Experience in higher education
  • Working knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations
  • Experience working in an environment where the development and delivery of educational programming is central to the organization’s mission
